Kink Shaming

Kink shaming refers to the act of belittling, criticizing, or attempting to make someone feel ashamed or inferior because of their specific sexual preferences or desires. The term "kink shaming" first emerged on social justice-focused blogs around 2008 before gaining wider recognition in mainstream society.

Kink shaming can manifest in various ways, from simply expressing disgust at someone's kink to exposing their private sexual preferences to the public, which can have serious consequences for their professional and personal lives. Since many kinks are still considered taboo, revealing them can potentially damage an individual's reputation.

In most parts of society, kink shaming is generally disapproved of, as people believe that what consenting adults choose to do in their private lives is no one else's concern, as long as it doesn't cause harm to others. Many online communities that focus on sexuality and fetishes have implemented anti-kink shaming policies to create a safe space for their users to express themselves without fear of judgment or ridicule.

However, there are some instances where attempts to protect others or uphold societal norms may unintentionally lead to kink shaming. For example, the belief that women are inherently submissive and meant to serve dominant men may be considered outdated by modern societal standards. However, for members of the Gor subculture, this belief may be an integral part of their kink. Condemning someone for holding such a belief, as Drupal did when it removed a contributor from its community in March 2017, could be seen as a form of kink shaming.

Some people argue that certain kinks, such as those that objectify or fetishize specific groups of people (e.g., Asian people or amputees), are dehumanizing and should be called out or kink shamed.

It is important to distinguish between shaming an individual for their kink, which is never acceptable, and critiquing a specific fetish that may be deemed problematic by individuals or society as a whole. While it is never appropriate to shame a person for their sexual preferences, there may be cases where a particular fetish itself warrants criticism or disapproval.
